TRANS FATS - avoid it!!

Here are some info about trans fats that I've learnt before.
What are trans fats?
Trans fats can be found naturally at low levels in some foods, such as those from animals, including meat and dairy products.
Artificial trans fats can be formed when oil goes through a process called hydrogenation, which hardens the oil. This type of fat, known as hydrogenated fat, can be used for frying or as an ingredient in processed foods. Much smaller amounts of artificial trans fats can also be made when oils are refined to make them fit to eat.
Artificial trans fats can be found in some processed foods such as biscuits and cakes where they are sometimes used to help give products a longer shelf life.

Are trans fats bad for you?

Consuming a diet high in trans fats can raise cholesterol levels in the blood, which can lead to health conditions such as heart attacks and strokes. However, most people in the UK don’t eat a lot of trans fats. On average, we eat about half the recommended maximum.

Reducing your intake of trans fats

If a product contains hydrogenated fats or oils, it may contain trans fats. Look out for the words partially hydrogenated fat or oil on food labels as these products may also contain trans fats.
If you want to reduce your intake of trans fats you should:
  • avoid products that list hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fat or oil on the label
  • include lots of fruit and vegetables in your diet
  • use fat-free or low-fat dairy products
  • when eating out try to eat less fried foods
  • try to eat fewer biscuits, cakes and pastries
  • use liquid vegetable oil for frying
